Objective: To promote the standards of Hermann Sons Fraternal Insurance organization through the art of dance and represent the organization as ambassadors. Performances are at area community events as well as surrounding areas of San Antonio throughout the dance year.
Polkateer Try-Outs and Selection: All interested dancers between the age of nine and seventeen, who danced and performed with SAHS dance class in the same year, are eligible to try-out. Try-out information will be announced and posted at recital practice and performance day. The try-out is a one day event held in June and is “mandatory” to be considered. Dancer’s will be instructed by Director and will try out before the Director and selected judges. The number of dancers for the Junior and Senior group will be determined by the Director as well as the final selection of the dancers. Selected dancers will be notified by the Director through e-mail once final determination is made. Once selected it is required one parent or guardian of dancer obtain a policy through Hermann Sons Fraternal Insurance prior to August 1st.
Organizational Responsibilities: The Polkateer Director, Assistant Teacher(s) and appointed Coordinator(s) are responsible for the SAHS Polkateer Show Group with regard to practices, dance outfits, accessories, and performances. Decisions associated with the SAHS Polkateers will be determined by the Director, Teacher(s) and Coordinator(s). In the event a decision cannot be made, then the item will be presented to the SAHS Grand Lodge for a final recommendation.
Director Responsibilities: To instruct, and choreograph; song, costume, and performance selection; direction of performances, and uniforms; maintain attendance and merit records.
Assistant Teacher(s) Responsibilities: Provides assistance to the Director with the above duties.
Coordinator(s) Responsibilities: Provide dancer with required dance attire, care for dance uniforms, performance scheduling, and communication link for organization via website and e-mail.
SAHSSD Elected Officers: Officers manage the collection of registration fees, San Antonio Dance fund raisers, recital coordination, collection of all funds and deposits. If you have questions or concerns regarding the items listed please direct those to the SAHSSD president. Coordinator(s) are not elected officers and do not collect funds on behalf of SAHSSD.
Polkateer Show Group Communication: Communication is essential between dancers, parents and the organization, all communication will be through website and e-mail. If any issues occur, please direct them via e-mail and you will receive a response from the Coordinator(s) and/or Director. Please allow ample response time considering the positions are volunteer and/or may not be primary employment. If the issue cannot be resolved at this level then it will be forwarded to the San Antonio Hermann Sons Grand Lodge for assistance and/or direction.
Background Check: Director, Assistant Teacher(s), Coordinator(s), and Elected Officers are required to have a back ground check processed by Hermann Sons.
Practice Information: Practice is a closed practice session and is held on Wednesday evenings. Dancer should have proper attire and a spill proof water bottle prior to practice start time. Please visit website for practice information. Dancer will be dismissed by director, parent(s)/guardian(s) are to remain outside the practice area and available 5 minutes prior to scheduled release time, until dancer is released.
Parent/Guardian Participation: Involvement with group activities and performances throughout the year is “mandatory” for all parents. Parents are obligated to participate in all Polkateer fund raising events, attend performances and meet any other requirements that may occur during the year.
Merit System: Polkateers are accountable for their attendance, conduct, and social media actions. Our goal is to assist with creating an individual who will represent Hermann Sons in an honorable manner as an Ambassador of Hermann Sons. The merit system prepares and teaches young dancers accountability that other organizations require of their dancers and assists with preparing them for their future endeavors. Dancers are awarded at the end of the dance season for their accomplishments derived from the merit system. Detailed information regarding the merit system is available on the website and records are maintained by the Director. It should be a distinct honor to be a member of the SAHS Polkateer Show Group. Dancers and parents should, at all times, conduct themselves in a respectable manner. All actions will be a credit to themselves and a reflection of the beloved organization we represent. Failure to abide by these simple measures will be a cause for removal from this program, no longer an active performer, and no refunds.
Polkateer Clinic: The last two weeks in August all Polkateers attend a “mandatory” clinic. The clinic teaches the dancers several polka dances creating a :30 minute performance routine that will be used in late September and throughout the year.
Polkateer Uniforms: Polkateer uniforms are the property of the SAHS Polkateer Show Group. Uniforms are only to be worn for Polkateer performances or events approved by organization. Uniforms are made to be adjustable and will be altered/fitted/adjusted by Director and/or Coordinator(s) only, a yearly uniform fee is collected for the maintenance. Fees for damages or replacement costs will be assessed for each dancer and fees are collected upon request, if fees are not paid reasonable consequences will be administered to parent and dancer. Uniform is to be dry cleaned when returned, all uniforms are returned on day of try-outs.
